October is here, which means you have social permission to seek out activities that will scare the wits out of you. One of the most accessible activities is watching scary movies, of which there will be plenty arriving on Netflix this month.

Evil Dead (2013)

A classic reimagined

The original Evil Dead movie came out in 1981, and was responsible for launching the careers of both Bruce Campbell and director Sam Raimi (Send Help). The premise is simple: a group of friends head to a cabin in the woods to get away for a while, but they end up finding a haunted book that unleashes terrifying demons. It happens every time.

Director Fede Álvarez (Alien: Romulus) gives his take on the story in this remake, which is shorter on campy fun but longer on blood-curdling screams and buckets of gore. If you're the kind of person who likes your horror movies to be brutal hardcore, this will satisfy you.

Evil Dead is available to stream on Netflix right now.

Happy Death Day 2U (2019)

As if birthdays aren't already stressful enough

The first Happy Death Day is a horror movie whodunit about a college student named Tree (Jessica Rothe) who gets caught in a time loop where she keeps getting murdered, and the only way out is to discover the identity of the killer. The sequel picks up directly where that movie left off, but it adds more killers, more characters, and a sci-fi angle. We learn exactly what's causing the time loop this time around, and it involves hopping genres a bit.

That said, Happy Death Day 2U still delivers the scares and laughs that made the first movie a hit. You can stream it on Netflix now. A third movie is in the works.

The Sixth Sense (1999)

No spoilers here, just in case anyone out there still doesn't know the twist

The Sixth Sense is a heavy, eerie horror thriller that became a sensation when it opened in theaters in 1999. It follows a therapist named Malcolm (Bruce Willis) who tries to help a young boy Cole (Haley Joel Osment). Cole's problem? As he famously says, "I see dead people."

The movie launched the career of director M. Night Shyamalan, although he arguably never made anything better than this. The movie is still skin-crawlingly creepy even nearly 30 years later. And even if you're seen it before, The Sixth Sense is one of those movies that gets better on second viewing. You can stream it on Netflix right now.

The Boogeyman (2023)

Available to stream October 5

The Boogeyman is based on a short story by Stephen King, long a go-to for spooky source material. In this one, a single father and his daughters start getting harassed and haunted by a mysterious creature who hides under beds and in closets, and who can only be driven away by light. This is the boogeyman, a mythical creature who appears in many different cultures, usually as a means for adults to frighten children into behaving themselves.

He also makes a great movie monster. The Boogeyman isn't the most creative horror movie ever made — you probably know what you're getting before you start streaming — but it's well-acted, effectively made, and may inspire you to invest in a night light.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)

Available to stream October 6

Okay, here's something with a lighter touch. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a rough adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen's classic novel about a slow-burning romance between the independently minded Elizabeth Bennet and the wealthy, aloof Mr. Darcy. But in this version, there are also zombies everywhere. So George Wickham isn't just a cad who runs off with Elizabeth's younger sister, he's also creating a zombie army to take over the country.

Obviously, everything here is very tongue-in-cheek, although there are enough bloody action scenes to interest horror fans.

Below (Limited Series)

Available to stream October 8

Now we get to the brand-new entries. Below is a miniseries starring Josh Hartnett as a Newfoundland fisherman whose small town is terrorized by a mysterious sea creature. He must rally to protect his family, his livelihood, and his community.

All six episodes on Below will drop at once in the normal Netflix fashion. The miniseries looks like it will take its time establishing the characters and setting the right tone before the horror begins. It could be the perfect creepy series to watch leading up to Halloween, provided you can avoid spoilers.

Dead-End Job (Season 1)

Available to stream October 9

Dead-End Job Credit: Netflix

Dead-End Job is about a 30-something man named Hyuk-jun (Lee Jae-wook). Drowning in debt, Hyuk-jun is intrigued by an opportunity to work for a mysterious agency that pays very well for part-time work. It turns out that the deal is too good to be true, and what he hoped would be a lucrative part-time job turns into a nightmare.

This show is even more mysterious than Below, but considering Netflix's excellent track record with foreign language shows, it's worth keeping an eye on.

The terror continues

There are even more horror movies and shows coming this month that could be worth checking out, including:

  • Lake Placid (1999): This late '90s creature feature pits a bunch of Maine residents against an enormous, man-eating crocodile. Look out for a scene-stealing appearance from Betty White.
  • Underworld: Blood Wars (2016): The fifth entry in the long-running movie franchise where Kate Beckinsale plays a vampire warrior at war with Lycans, aka werewolves.
  • Haunted Hotel Season 2: A single mom moves into a haunted hotel in this animated comedy. You can watch new episodes on October 9.
  • Is It Cake? Halloween Season 2: Bakers create spooky cakes that look like things that aren't cakes. It's up to the contestants to spot the differences. Stream new episodes on October 9.

Don't scare yourself too much.
