By far one of the biggest advantages of Home Assistant is that it runs without the internet. Zigbee lights, Z-Wave sensors, Matter devices, ESPHome gadgets, they all keep running, so do your automations, regardless of whether you've got internet or not. This is a rather basic functionality, which, unfortunately, is somehow still a dealbreaker for commercial platforms.
With Alexa or Google Home, your smart home is effectively held hostage by a cloud connection. When you tell Alexa to turn on the lights, your voice is recorded, shipped to Amazon's servers, processed, and a command is sent back to your home. That round trip has to work perfectly every single time you control a device in your home.
Home Assistant, however, processes everything locally on hardware you own. You don't need a beast of a server either. Anything from a Raspberry Pi, an old laptop or computer, or a Home Assistant Green can run Home Assistant without any issues.

Since Home Assistant processes everything locally, none of your data ever leaves the house. By contrast, every time you interact with Google Home, that data, including voice commands, device activity, when you turn things on or off, your location patterns, and more, gets fed to Google's servers and folded into an advertising profile. Alexa does the same for Amazon, while also linking your smart home usage with your shopping behavior.
Home Assistant collects none of that. There are voice recordings to be sent to servers (only if you want to use voice, that is), no usage data harvested, no third-party data sharing agreements blindsiding you. Everything lives on your hardware, runs on your network, and goes nowhere unless you deliberately configure it to. If you're also uncomfortable with the fact that a large corporation knows exactly when you wake up and what room you're walking into, Home Assistant is as good as it gets.

Alexa routines and Google Home automations are fine for simple tasks, but if you're trying to build a rather complex automation, such as one that factors in time of day, current outdoor temperature, whether anyone is home, your power bill, and other factors before triggering a device, the commercial solutions will quickly hit their limits.
Home Assistant's automation engine lets you combine conditions in ways that commercial platforms haven't caught up with yet. With the Home Assistant Companion app, you can even use your phone's battery percentage, charging status, or Wi-Fi signal strength as an automation factor or trigger. There are plenty of Home Assistant automations you can simply run from an old phone.
The automation editor itself is very visual and easy to use, once you get past the initial learning curve. It is more involved than setting up routines or automations on Alexa or Google Home, but it also gives you a lot more control over what you can do and how your smart home should behave.

This means you can automate your EV to charge only when your solar panels are producing a surplus. You can set up alerts when an appliance is drawing more power than usual — a common indicator of a failing device. Alexa and Google Home have no equivalent and would send you to your utility provider for the slightest of clues.
Similar to automations, this will take some effort to set up, especially considering you're now dealing with energy-grid level devices that might require professional help to work on. It's also a more involved process that requires a thorough setup to get anything useful out of. Regardless, you have the option to do so.

Home Assistant's built-in voice assistant, called Assist, runs on a fully local stack: Whisper for speech-to-text, Piper for text-to-speech, and the built-in intent system for understanding commands. None of this requires an internet connection or a cloud account. The Android client runs the entire speech pipeline on-device, turning your phone into a private, always-listening hub without sending a word to anyone's servers.
That said, Assist is nowhere as smooth as Alexa or Google Home for casual conversations. It's more of a voice command system than an actual AI you can talk to. Wake word reliability is also catching up to Amazon and Google at the moment. It's fine for toggling lights when you're going to bed, but don't expect to have a bedside chat with it.

Alexa and Google Home are consumer products built around convenience and to lock you into a broader ecosystem involving shopping, media, and endless subscriptions. Home Assistant isn't trying to sell you anything. It's open-source software maintained by a global community, and it's been steadily eating into territory that commercial platforms treat as good enough.
Every release ships new integrations, better automation tooling, and more capable local AI features. So if you truly want a smart home upgrade, Home Assistant is the way forward.
