Summary

  • OpenAI adds 62,500 free credits (~$2,500 value) to affected Pro accounts as damage control.
  • Pro 200 allowance is halved; the downgrade kicks in after Oct 2026 grandfathering ends.
  • Credits expire at the end of 2026 and are limited to existing Pro 200 subscribers, not new signups.

OpenAI is giving 62,500 free usage credits to some existing users, which would normally cost roughly $2,500. The credits are appearing automatically in eligible Pro accounts.

This out-of-the-blue generosity appeared after a wave of anger and backlash over the changes OpenAI made to its paid subscription plans. The usage limits for some of the more advanced models will be halved on the $200-per-month tier. In other words, this isn't quite a no-strings-attached windfall, and OpenAI appears to be hoping to do some damage control with this giveaway.

OpenAI's recently updated Pro lineup now includes three tiers. There's the "Pro 100" for $100 per month, the "Pro 200" offered at $200, and the "Pro 500," which, you guessed it, costs a whopping $500 monthly. Unfortunately, Astra Ultrafast is only available with the $500-per-month subscription, and Pro 200 subscribers receive less usage than the plan previously offered for the same price tag.

OpenAI says the reduction reflects its “increasingly efficient models.” Meanwhile, many users on X (Twitter) have complained about GPT 6.1 and other models eating through weekly usage in mere hours.

Pro subscribers around the world are furious, and it's no wonder why. OpenAI has allowed Pro 200 users to retain their previous allowance through October 29, 2026, but the downgrade begins the following day. Previously, Pro 200 users had 20 times the ChatGPT Work and Codex usage available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. But now, usage will drop to 10 times what's available with ChatGPT Plus. Moreover, GPT-6 Pro access will also fall from 200 to 100 messages weekly.

Ironically, these downgrades are happening just as Anthropic increased Claude's five-hour usage limits by 20%. So, while Claude users are receiving additional headroom, some of OpenAI's highest-spending customers are being asked to spend more or expect less.

To soften that blow, affected subscribers are now finding 62,500 usage credits in their accounts. Roughly speaking, you'd normally have to spend $2,500 to get as many credits. There's a catch, though, as the credits are only usable until the end of 2026.

OpenAI's generous offer appears to be limited to existing Pro 200 subscribers who are affected by the downgrade. So, new subscribers shouldn't expect the same balance.
