Power tools are some of the most helpful additions to your workbench and garage if you own a home. Even if you don't own a home, you should still at least have a drill or electric screwdriver, as they would certainly come in handy. Of course, power tools have become more essential for the larger-scale projects you're attempting to do, even if it's just clearing away brush and weeds in your home.

They might not be the flashiest purchases that you'll make, as they aren't going to be machines you're going to be using constantly. But they can boost the curbside appeal and aesthetic of your home exponentially. If you're in the market for some new power tools, you need to pay attention to when the best time of year is to buy them. Because anyone who isn't buying them at certain times is costing themselves money.

There are set times when you should be buying power tools

The calendar really doesn't change for these kinds of purchases

Listen: I understand that sometimes you need a machine at a specific moment. If your sink is clogged and you need a drain snake, you aren't going to wait until the next sale to buy one. Your lawn can grow only so high before you spend the money on a mower to cut it down.

But if you do have the luxury of waiting to buy a tool, you should do it. There are times of the year when larger power tools typically go on sale, and there are months when they aren't.

This calendar isn't going to be uniform for every store out there. But most of the larger retailers, like The Home Depot, Lowe's, and Amazon, do have sales on power tools at the same time each year.

When you start buying power tools, you're probably going to want to find a brand that you like and stick with that. Larger manufacturers like Dewalt, Ryobi, Milwaukee, Greenworks, and more are sold at multiple stores. This gives you the flexibility to compare prices at different stores and see if there is a difference.

I’ve tried to utilize Ryobi tools for construction-type tools, mostly because I like using the Ryobi ONE+ system, but I also have tools from Milwaukee that I love, and Greenworks, because they can use the same chargers. I've either purchased all of my tools during sales or been given them as gifts or hand-me-downs.

The sales are spread out throughout the year

For the most part, you're going to find sales at your stores like Harbor Freight, Direct Tools Outlet, and the ones listed above at the same time. You'll find most stores run a sale in the early spring, usually in March or April. This is typically a Spring Black Friday-type event, basically just to space out the sales throughout the year.

You likely won't find sales during Presidents' Day, as those are usually promoting big appliances. If you are in need of a new refrigerator, that's the time of year to buy one.

That first sale of the year is often used to get people ready for the upcoming months when they can use their power tools more. A lot of power tool brands sell outdoor power tools, which you're probably only going to be using from March through October. It obviously depends on where you live, but the bulk of outside work, minus snow shoveling, is done then. That first sale could offer items like a free battery charger with the purchase of a tool or a carrying case for half off when you buy a power tool. You can find good add-ons during this sale.

The second sale of the year is Father's Day. This is when all the big retailers, including the brands themselves on their own websites, promote some of their biggest sales. They advertise the deals as something all dads will like because dads love saving money, and why not give them tools that they might buy for themselves? I've been given power tools for Father's Day, and I have to say they are always appreciated. The best kinds of deals on that day are usually kits, like ratchet sets, screwdriver sets, and starter kits. For the first-time dad who might be assembling a crib for the first time, Father's Day is the time to get them started.

The third notable sale is usually Black Friday. Everything else on the internet seems to be discounted during that time, so why not power tools too? Despite this being a time when you might buy tools you don't need until next year, it's usually a massive sale. There are individual tools marked way down as well as kits, sets, and more. This is arguably the best time of year to buy new cordless power tools, which you can use more easily inside.

What are some other times of year you might see discounts?

If you happen to need a tool at another time of the year, you should look at the holiday calendar. You'll likely be able to find some deals around the 4th of July, Labor Day, Memorial Day, and New Year's Day.

The New Year's Day sales are often clearance events, as companies are trying to move on from their inventory before the new year. Memorial Day is similar to the Spring Black Friday events because it stands alone during the year, and it can get people started with projects earlier in the year.

For the first-time dad who might be assembling a crib for the first time, Father's Day is the time to get them started.

4th of July sales for power tools typically include combo packs, such as a DEWALT 20V Max 3-Tool Combo, which has a drill driver, impact driver, and circular saw. You might be able to get an entire set of power tools at one time if you want to start your collection.

Labor Day sales often give you deals on some of the tools you might have used more during the summer and spring, like weed whackers, edgers, and lawnmowers, because they are not going to be stuck in inventory. You should also take this time to look for any winter tools or machines, like a snow blower or electric shovel.

Keep an eye out for specific dates for power tool sales

Buying new power tools can set you back quite a bit. So being smart about it and planning out when you buy them can save you a bundle. Looking around major holidays, as well as Father's Day, is always a good bet because hardware suppliers often go all out to attract customers at that time. It's a good idea to visit your stores around these times because they are practically giving the tools away.
