Most people trust their router's connected device list as a source of truth, and that's where the trouble starts. The list gives you cryptic hostnames, raw hardware addresses, and occasionally nothing at all, which makes it nearly impossible to know whether everything on your network is supposed to be there. I honestly believed I knew exactly what was using my Wi-Fi and when, but Fing gives you a live list of every device connected to it. Like many, I don't check very often, and since I have kids, there are tons of devices to connect. You likely have the same problem, and routers aren't always great at listing what is connected and how often it is used, so the router stops being as secure.
Fing gives you a live list of every device on your Wi-Fi. The app figures out all the address mapping on its own once you connect. When it runs a scan, it finds every active device on the network and shows you the exact IP addresses, manufacturer names, and connection types for each one, making it much easier to spot anything suspicious.

That level of detail matters more than you might think. Home networks these days have a surprising number of connected devices, such as phones, laptops, smart thermostats, printers, and security cameras.
If you check your router's built-in UI, you'll usually see cryptic device names, random strings, or blank fields that make it nearly impossible to distinguish your own devices from unauthorized ones. A dedicated scanner translates all of that into plain names and brand labels.
If you do find something that shouldn't be there, these apps go further than just showing you a list. You can set up alerts the moment a new device joins, then cut off its internet access or block it entirely without needing to log in to your router.
Three devices were stealing my bandwidth
Three devices I didn't recognize were sitting on my network the whole time
After checking the ARP tables and scanning connected clients, I found three active connections. I had no idea they were there. The first one was a mystery; it had no recognizable hostname, no obvious manufacturer. It just said guest.
I am no detective, but since I have no guests, I assumed it wasn't something that should be there. I blocked it, and have yet to see anything wrong with my own devices. Other than just eating my bandwidth, that's a real security problem. Someone on your network can potentially intercept traffic if your credentials are weak.
The second device turned out to be an old HP DeskJet printer sitting on a dusty power strip in another room. I very rarely print things out. If I do, I make sure I have the right ink and that it's set up nearby. However, I haven't printed anything in weeks. Even so, the printer ran around the clock, holding a DHCP lease and constantly broadcasting its presence to every device on the network.
This was just background noise, a completely forgotten device that shouldn't even be on. By turning it off, I'm saving electricity too.
The third was probably the biggest bandwidth drain of all. I have a Fire TV Stick hammering away with updates and streaming preview content while the TV screen stays pitch black. I don't use my bedroom TV often, and I thought I had it connected to the same power strip as my streaming stick. It turns out I was completely wrong and had the stick plugged into another outlet.
A lot of smart devices stay half-awake so they can respond instantly when you pick up the remote or do updates in the background. That means they're never really off. Even on standby, they're polling servers, pulling telemetry, and downloading video in the background with nothing on screen to tip you off.
All three of these had been running undetected. Without actually sitting down and auditing the network, I never would have known.

Devices running in the background are a major source of bandwidth loss, such as smart media players, gaming consoles, and printers. They're built to wake up instantly and grab updates in the background, not to actually save bandwidth.
Your streaming devices do this as well, especially when connected to a wall outlet. They are updating, sending telemetry, and pinging local servers. Your printer is doing something similar.
All of that background chatter runs on discovery protocols called mDNS and SSDP, which are the technologies that make devices find each other automatically when you plug them in. It is convenient, but when you've got dozens of idle devices all doing this simultaneously, they eat up a surprising amount of wireless airtime and force your router to chew through packets it doesn't need to.
So you'll get more lag and worse performance for the devices you're actually using. There's a security angle here, too. Hardware sitting forgotten in the background tends to be unmanaged. So you don't know if it's been patched, what it's running, or whether it still has the default admin password it shipped with.
That's exactly what attackers look for: a neglected device is almost always softer than anything you're actively paying attention to, and it can serve as a foothold to penetrate deeper into your network.
All you have to do is unplug devices you're not using instead of just putting them to sleep. It clears up wireless clutter and closes the blind spots left by forgotten hardware.
Do this more than once
You cannot just scan once and fix the problem once. You need to consistently track what is using your network and fix any issues. If you do not, then you're going to find yourself with slow internet and possibly a security risk.
