The conventional wisdom on Ryobi is that it's a starter brand—something you outgrow once you get serious. I bought into that framing for longer than I should have. Then I spent a few years actually building things, fixing things, and stocking a garage with ONE+ tools, and the argument started to fall apart. The battery platform is the product. Everything after that is a bare tool—no batteries, no charger, just the tool itself, typically $30–$70 cheaper than the kit version.
That changes the decision calculus. Adding a new capability to the workshop stops being a big investment and becomes a small one. The Ryobi VORTEX power scrubber I added to handle shower grout ran about $99 for the telescoping model. On a competing platform, or as a standalone device, that same function costs more and requires a separate charging ecosystem. Because I already owned the batteries, the scrubber was the only cost.
Contrast that with mixing cordless brands—a DeWalt drill here, a Milwaukee driver there, and a Makita saw because it was on sale. Each purchase locks you into another charging system. You end up with four chargers, six battery types, and no interchangeability. Being on ONE+ means that any tool in the catalog is one battery away from working. That lowers the activation energy for buying tools you wouldn't have considered otherwise—and some of those turn out to be genuinely worth every dollar.
The Ryobi ONE+ 18V cordless heat gun is a good example. I didn't plan to own one. That changed the night my furnace tripped its safety shutoff. I eventually found the cause outside: the exhaust vent had iced over completely. The heat gun cleared it inside of five minutes. The heat came back on before I went back inside. The tool costs roughly $40–$50 bare. That single repair covered it.
My Ryobi 150W ONE+ power inverter is another one I never planned to buy. Snap it onto any ONE+ battery, and it delivers a real 120V outlet plus two USB ports. I've run it in the three-season room when I needed power without running an extension cord, and pulled it out during a power outage to keep devices charged. A dedicated portable power station for the same job costs $150–$250 or more. The Ryobi version pulls that cost down to around $49 on sale because it borrows batteries already doing other work. Neither tool was on my shopping list. Both earned their spot because adding them to a platform I was already on made the decision easy.
Where the ecosystem breaks down—and what to know before you buy
Battery compatibility doesn't mean equal performance across the lineup
Buying smart within ONE+ means knowing which tools don't pull their weight. Battery compatibility is not a quality guarantee. Some entries in the catalog are genuinely weak, and finding that out after the purchase is an avoidable frustration.
The Ryobi ONE+ 18V 13 in. string trimmer is the most common example. It loses its footing fast in real yard conditions. Spring in Northern Indiana doesn't ease you in—the grass comes back thick, and the motor struggles to keep pace. Runtime is the other issue; one charge wasn't enough to finish the yard, and I needed to stop mid-job to swap batteries. At 13 inches wide, the cutting path is narrow for anything beyond a tidy border. Some tools in the lineup simply don't belong in every yard, and the trimmer is one of them for anything larger than a small lot.
On the other hand, the Ryobi ONE+ HP 18V brushless 6-1/2 in. track saw has a different problem. The rail is supposed to eliminate the inconsistency of a freehand cut. Instead, there's enough looseness in the saw-to-rail connection that it introduces its own. Rough framing work hides it. Anything requiring tight tolerances—a cabinet panel, finished trim, a joint that has to close cleanly—exposes it across every inch of the cut.
When 18V isn't enough, the 40V lineup bridges the gap

The 40V platform is separate from ONE+—it uses its own batteries and doesn't share with the 18V lineup. That's a real cost to factor in. But it extends the Ryobi relationship into the yard in ways the 18V tools can't match.
The Ryobi 40V 15 in. Expand-It string trimmer is what the 18V version should have been. More torque through thick spring growth, a wider cutting path, and noticeably longer runtime per charge. My zero-turn mower handles the bulk of my 2.5-acre property, but the 40V trimmer covers the detail work along fences, beds, and the house perimeter. The difference between the two voltage levels isn't subtle.
Two separate battery platforms within one brand sounds like a complication, but in practice, it's simpler than maintaining tools across multiple manufacturers. All the chargers look the same, the workflow is familiar, and Ryobi's service infrastructure covers both. The tradeoff is real—you're buying into two ecosystems instead of one—but they're both inside the same product family, and that still beats the alternative.
The platform is the long game
The battery ecosystem is the reason I'm still buying Ryobi tools years into owning them. Not because every tool in the catalog is good—some aren't, and knowing which ones to skip is part of buying intelligently—but because each addition costs less and integrates more cleanly than it would on any other platform. The first battery kit is the real investment. Everything after builds on it. Once you've made that initial commitment, the ONE+ library stops looking like a budget lineup and starts looking like exactly what it is: a coherent system that keeps getting more useful the longer you stay in it.
