Android is so closely tied to smartphones that imagining it anywhere else seems just wrong. Samsung phones run it, Pixels run it, and countless cheaper handsets worldwide rely on it. StatCounter puts Android at 68.36% of worldwide mobile OS usage share as of July 2026. Yet when Andy Rubin was pitching Android to investors in 2004, none of those phones existed. The device sitting at the center of his presentation was a digital camera.
That early version of Android was supposed to turn cameras into connected devices, with a cloud component for storing photos online. Then its creators looked at the market and changed course.
Android's first home was supposed to be inside a camera
The cloud showed up before the smartphone did
Android Inc. was founded in 2003, with Andy Rubin among the small group behind the company. By April 2004, Rubin was showing investors a vision that looks surprisingly familiar today, except there wasn't a phone anywhere in sight.
One of the slides he later revealed at the 2013 Japan New Economy Summit showed a digital camera connected, either wired or wirelessly, to a home computer, which in turn communicated with something labeled the Android Datacenter. Rubin described the idea as a camera platform with a cloud component for storing photos online.
In modern terms, Android was trying to give digital cameras some of the connectivity we now take for granted. Instead of leaving photos trapped on a memory card until you manually transferred them, the camera would integrate with a larger system that could automatically upload those images to online storage. Android was already being conceived as a software platform rather than a single piece of camera hardware.
I can see why that sounded promising in 2004. Digital photography had already replaced film for a growing number of people, yet retrieving pictures from a camera could still require memory cards, cables, desktop software, and several minutes of housekeeping. A camera that could run software and move photos into online services offered an obvious improvement.
The strange part isn't that Android started with cameras. The strange part is how accurately the idea predicted where photography would go, even as it chose the wrong device to carry it there.
Five months later, the camera was out of the picture
Phones offered a much bigger canvas
The camera plan didn't survive for long. Rubin said Android concluded that the digital-camera market simply wasn't large enough. Roughly five months after the early camera pitch, another investor presentation described Android as an "open-source handset solution." The underlying platform survived the change. Rubin later said the operating system developed for cameras became the one used for cellphones. This was still 2004, more than two years before Apple unveiled the iPhone, and Rubin later recalled that Microsoft and Symbian were the competitors he was worried about at the time.
That pivot put Android in a much nastier market, but also a vastly more valuable one. Mobile software in the mid-2000s was fragmented across platforms such as Symbian and Microsoft's Windows Mobile, as well as BlackBerry's software and proprietary systems built by individual manufacturers. Rubin saw an opening in economics. Handset hardware was getting cheaper while operating-system licensing remained a cost manufacturers had to account for. Android's plan was to remove that hurdle and spread the platform across as many phones as possible.
I think that's the most consequential part of this story. Android didn't become important because someone suddenly invented an entirely different operating system after abandoning the camera idea. The team recognized that the software they'd already been building belonged in a market with far more room to grow.
Google acquired Android in August 2005, while the startup was still largely unknown outside the industry. The purchase became one of the pivotal moments in Google's history from 1998 onward, with Rubin and the rest of the Android team continuing to develop the mobile platform inside Google and setting up the much larger push that followed.
The scale of Google's ambition became much clearer on November 5, 2007. Google, HTC, T-Mobile, Qualcomm, Motorola, and dozens of other companies announced the Open Handset Alliance alongside Android. Rather than producing one much-rumored "Google phone," the group wanted Android to provide a common open platform that manufacturers could build many phones around. That strategy also helps explain why Android is considered open-source and what that description actually means.
The camera OS ended up eating the phone market
And eventually found its way back into cameras
The first commercial result arrived the following year, kicking off Android's first 15 years as a smartphone operating system with the HTC Dream. T-Mobile announced the G1, made by HTC and also known as the HTC Dream, on September 23, 2008. It went on sale in the US on October 22 as the first Android-powered phone, complete with a touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Google apps, and access to Android Market. From there, Android expanded across manufacturers, form factors, and price ranges until it became the dominant mobile operating system worldwide.
There's an especially good punchline buried in what happened along the way. Android eventually ended up running digital cameras after all. In 2012, Nikon introduced the Coolpix S800c, a Wi-Fi compact camera running Android that could use apps and share photos online. Samsung followed the same basic idea much more aggressively with the Galaxy Camera, combining Android 4.1, Google Play access, Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity with a 21x optical zoom lens.
The future arrived with a phone attached
Those cameras never became Android's main business, of course. Smartphones were already swallowing much of what standalone compact cameras did, to the point that a modern Pixel can replace several dedicated cameras for everyday photography, including the connectivity Android's founders had originally wanted to add.
Looking back, the first Android pitch feels prescient. Cameras really did become connected computers backed by apps, online storage, location services, and instant sharing. Android's founders simply discovered that the camera most people would carry everywhere would have a phone attached to it.
